Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the kids you tap to speak for the school, the brainy ones who have the energy of a teen but the poise and grace much beyond their years. In fact, many of them have had the kind of life experiences that most of us only read about in social media, yet they come to school every day, they participate, they get good grades.
My IB classroom is kind of like a private school education in an inner-city public high school in Dallas.
Our school is a very old, very established institution in East Dallas that enjoys a reputation for success that belies its challenges. More than three-quarters of our population is minority; more than half of the families who attend our school live on the harder side of the socio-economic divide. Our school district has, to its credit, promised support for the International Baccalaureate program, but the reality is that there are many priorities to address in our school and across the district--a reality that many large, urban districts face. My students have talent and intellect; what they need are tools.
My Project
In only three years, we have nearly quadrupled the number of students in the program from 12 to 40 currently enrolled; next year we'll have 62 students total. Cameras will allow them to make movies.
It's called "Film," but it's a course in collaboration and planning.
While the course covers theory and history, it emphasizes film production, which means working cooperatively to meet a goal. Students can't cram a movie overnight. Film is a place where students can learn transferable workplace skills, but in order to produce, we have to have equipment. We truly depend on the kindness of strangers.
