My students need these wobble chairs and floor seats to better interact with their environment and build strong, healthy bodies. We use student seating to teach students how to advocate for themselves and their learning.
Our school is a Title I Innovation School located in Denver. We are a National Green Ribbon School award winner, and for the past four years, our school has been identified as both a "high-performing" and "high-growth" school. In addition to our academic success, we are proud of our "hands-on, brains-on" approach to learning where students get outside the classroom and bring learning to life. Our school is a school that focuses on integrating our sustainability curriculum with core content standards. We strongly believe in teaching our students how to live sustainable lifestyles.
With our socioeconomically diverse population, our students represent over 30 countries from around the world, speaking 17 different languages, and 64.9% of students receive free or reduced lunch.
My vision is to have a classroom that is warm and inviting that allows students to develop their bodies in addition to their minds. With shelving space limited in our rooms, the ability to get student materials to them even faster is key. I want my students to be able to choose how they learn best, in addition to having access to their work. Classrooms no longer are based on desks but rather on cooperative learning, which is my dream.
My Project
Research shows that student choice in seating increases students' grades and their engagement. They are happier at school, and research says that they will increase their academic cooperative conversations. Students can clearly articulate what their needs are and how the learning environment helps them meet their needs. It increase their abilities to problem solve which makes students more critical thinkers.
Choice classroom seating creates opportunities for collaboration, increased communication, creativity, and more critical thinking by helping students manage their physical environment.
Students will be able to lay down, stand up, move around, and move flexibly while growing their brains with these wobble chairs and floor seats. Job environments no longer are in cubicles, so why should our schools look like that?
